Your gutters are an integral part of your landscaping and drainage systems. They move water away from your home and can help to keep excess moisture out of your basement. If your gutters are clogged with leaves, dirt, or other debris, you’re running the risk of damaging your roof, siding, landscaping, and even your foundation. Fortunately, there are several methods for preventing clogs and keeping your gutters running clear and clean.

Inspect and Clean Your Gutters Regularly

Depending on the conditions where you live, you may need to clean your gutters as frequently as once a month. Clogs usually show up at the downspouts, and can be as simple as a clump of leaves. If you don’t clear the clogs, water can overflow in the gutters, flow down the side of your home, and maybe even into your basement. In addition, water overflowing your gutters can cause the soil around your foundation to shift and possibly damage the foundation.

Trim Trees and Shrubs Around Your Home

As mentioned above, a clump of leaves can be trouble for your gutters.  If you trim back your trees and shrubs, you’ll eliminate a lot of the debris that can end up in your gutters. A general rule of thumb is to cut back anything within eight feet of your home.

Look for Other Possible Cloggers

Anything that’s in your yard can be blown around and end up in your gutters. In addition, bits of shingles or the gravel like coating on your shingles can cause problems. Check your roof from time to time and have any loose shingles repaired or replaced.

Install a Gutter Protection System

Gutter covers will prevent anything other than water from entering your gutters. There are several brands of gutter covers that you can purchase. Some are do it yourself options, but the most effective ones require a professional to install them.

Install Premium Grade Gutters

One way to avoid problems with your gutters is to purchase a premium gutter system. The gutter system you currently have may be sub par and may even be in need of repairs. While patching an inferior gutter system will save you money, it will also cause you trouble year after year. A high grade gutter system will help your gutters to remain clear and clean and trouble free.
